Carrying Bag for Fashion Doll and Clothes

Instructions for Making a Doll Carrying Bag

The holidays are coming. Many little girls need a
Doll
Carrying Bag,
such as the one
shown here, for storing and transporting their fashion dolls and doll wardrobes.

Supplies:

• 1 yd. fairly heavy dress fabric
• 60 inches of 1-1/2 inch grosgrain ribbon
• 18-inch zipper
• printed fabric for appliqué, thread

Instructions:

1.  Draft, then cut the patterns from fairly heavy dress fabric.

2. Overcast all edges.

3. Cut two long strips of printed fabric. Turn the edges under and pin
about four inches below the top and bottom
20-3/4" edges .to the rectangular piece of
f abric. Sew.

4. Sew 1-1/2 inch of either end of the 20-3/4 inch seam on a 3/4-inch seam allowance. Set the zipper into the seam. If you have trouble setting zippers, pin the zipper in place, then back-stitch the zipper in by hand.

5. Pin one end of the grosgrain ribbon to one of the two circle pieces. Cut an appliqué from printed fabric, turn the edges under and pin over the pinned grosgrain ribbon. Machine sew the appliqué to the circle.

6.
Turn the grosgrain ribbon back over itself at the top edge of the circle so it will sew into the seam in the next step.

7. Pin the circle to one end of the bag: Fold the circle in half, then in half again., placing pins at each fold to divide the circle into four sections. Repeat with the end of the rectangular piece. Pin the four sections of the circle to the four sections of the end of the rectangular piece. Sew together on a 3/8-inch seam allowance. Check the sewing to make sure there are no folds.

8. Open zipper part way. Repeat Steps 5-7
with the other side to complete the bag.

Laurel made the bag, above left, so her little cousin Emma would have a storage solution for her new doll and its wedding ensemble, shown above.

Hint:
Trace a 10-inch plate or pot lid to draft the circle pattern.

Fabrics used to make the doll carrying bag were purchased at Fabrics on the Hill in Chestnut Hill.
